Gunn was born in Cleveland Ohio but moved at young age to born in Santa Fe New Mexico the daughter of Sharon Anna Kathryn Shana Gunn who was an interior designer, and Clemens Earl Gunn Jr. who was a real estate. Santa Fe Preparatory School, where she was a graduate in 1986. She studied theater at Northwestern University and graduated with her degree in 1990. Gunn was a student of the British American Drama Academy in London in the fall of 1988. Pamela Adlon was her housemate after Gunn moved from Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn was well known for her role for her character Skyler in AMC's Breaking drama. Between 2013 and 2014, she was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding Leading Female Actress in Drama Series. In August of 2013, she wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times examining the public dislike directed toward her character.
